Womans Suffrage
This was an issue raised in 1876 regarding womans rights to vote on the provincial level. The women of Ontario were the first ones to start the war against sexism in Canada. Several famous persons include Nellie McClung who was famous for her concentrated and highly succesful protest in Manitoba from 1912-1915, and Emily Murphy who also joined Nellie McClung in her attack in Manitoba. At that time in Manitoba, Womans suffrage encountered an obstacle in their path. This obstacle took the form of a human, who was the Conservative Premier Roblin. Nellie founded the Political Equality League, which through many efforts effected the Liberal Party's opinion on Womans Suffrage. Her protests consisted of propaganda, skits and many public speeches.
Eventually, Manitoba led the whole of Canada to accepting these changes. In 1916, Women in Manitoba became the first to be able to vote, and run at a provincial level in Canada. Saskatchewan and Alberta quickly follow suit in the same year, and Emily Murphy becomes the first woman to be appointed to a magistrate. This ends the long fight for the right to vote and run in Canada for women.
